Brazilian Blowout, Keratin Treatment, or Smooth Filler: Which One Actually Fits Your Hair?

July 22, 2026

Brazilian Blowout, keratin treatment, or Smooth Filler? Here’s how Houston’s three smoothing treatments actually compare.

Houston humidity does not care about your hair plans. It shows up in March, settles in for the summer, and by August it’s basically a fourth season here. If you’ve ever left the house with a straight blowout and arrived somewhere twenty minutes later looking like you didn’t try, you already know.

M Salon carries three treatments built to fight that: the Brazilian Blowout, a keratin treatment, and Smooth Filler. Clients ask us often which one they need. Short answer: it depends on your hair, your goals, and how much change you’re comfortable with. Longer answer below.

Brazilian Blowout

This is the treatment most people have heard of, and for good reason. It works by coating each strand in a protective protein layer that smooths the cuticle and eliminates frizz, rather than altering the hair’s internal structure. The full service takes about 80 minutes in the chair. Results last up to 12 weeks, there’s no visible line where new growth starts, and it cuts daily styling time roughly in half. It also works on a wide range of textures, including color-treated hair, with no wait period afterward. Work out, tie it up, swim, whatever. Same day is fine.

One thing worth knowing before you book: traditional Brazilian Blowout formulas have historically included a small amount of formaldehyde-releasing preservative, applied and processed under professional ventilation and safety protocols in the salon. If that’s a dealbreaker for you, keep reading.

Keratin Treatment

Keratin treatments work by replenishing the hair’s natural keratin protein, which gets stripped over time by heat styling, coloring, and just general life. The result is smoother, stronger, more manageable hair with less frizz. It’s a gentler process than a Brazilian Blowout in some formulations, and it tends to work especially well on hair that’s damaged, over-processed, or just tired.

It won’t fully straighten curly or very textured hair the way a Brazilian Blowout can. Think “healthier and calmer” rather than “pin-straight.”

A lot of clients land on keratin treatments after a rough stretch for their hair. Too much bleach, too many hot tools, a color correction that took some toll along the way. The protein replenishment genuinely helps hair feel stronger again, not just smoother. It’s as much a repair service as it is a frizz fix, which is part of why stylists reach for it so often on compromised hair.

Smooth Filler

This is the newer option, and the one we get the most questions about. Smooth Filler (by Wella Professionals) is a formaldehyde-free treatment built on a minimalist, eight-ingredient formula. It’s silicone-free, mineral-oil-free, fragrance-free, and vegan. Instead of coating the hair, it works its way into the strand and fills in the microscopic gaps in the hair’s structure that cause frizz in the first place. The whole appointment runs under two hours, and results last up to three months, fading out gradually with no awkward regrowth line.

Is it identical to a Brazilian Blowout in strength? No. Curly and coily hair comes out calmer and easier to manage with Smooth Filler, not stick-straight, and that’s by design, not a shortfall. Is it a real solution to Houston frizz? Also yes. The best way to think about it: Smooth Filler trades a small amount of straightening power for a formula built without the ingredient a lot of clients want to avoid.

A Quick Way to Think About It

If you want maximum straightening power and don’t mind a traditional formula, Brazilian Blowout is the strongest option. If your hair has been through a lot lately and needs to feel healthy again, keratin is worth a close look. And if you want real frizz control with a formaldehyde-free, minimalist formula, Smooth Filler is built for exactly that. None of these are wrong choices. They’re just built for different priorities.

So Which One Should You Book?

Honestly, that’s a conversation for your stylist, not a blog post. Hair texture, how much frizz you’re actually dealing with, how you feel about the ingredients, and how much time you want to save on styling day to day, all of that factors in. A quick consultation before booking will save you time and money, and it means you walk out with the treatment that’s actually right for your hair instead of whichever one a friend mentioned.

What we can tell you: August in Houston is exactly the month to book one of these. The humidity index climbs, styling time gets longer, and frizz wins more mornings than it should. Getting ahead of it now, rather than fighting it daily for the next two months, tends to be worth it.

Traveling this summer? Learn which R+Co and Oribe products belong in your carry-on, and why salon-size isn’t always the right size. Houston summers mean one thing for a lot of our clients: getting out of Houston. Beach trips, weddings, long weekends somewhere with better airflow. And almost every trip, the same packing dilemma shows up. Your favorite products don’t fit in a carry-on, and TSA is not going to negotiate with you about it. That’s the whole reason travel-size haircare exists. Not as a downgrade. As the same professional-grade formula, just sized for a bag instead of a bathroom counter. At M Salon, we carry travel sizes from two of our product lines: R+Co and Oribe. Both are professional brands our stylists use and recommend daily, so a travel bottle isn’t a lesser version of what you get in the chair. It’s the exact same formula. Why It Matters More Than You’d Think If you’ve invested in a balayage, a gloss, or a smoothing treatment, the products you use afterward directly affect how long that result lasts. Drugstore travel packs are often reformulated, watered down, or simply not the same product as the full size. That gap shows up fast, especially with color-treated or chemically processed hair exposed to a different climate, different water, and a lot more sun than it gets at home. R+Co’s On a Cloud Bond Building + Repair Styling Oil is a good example. It’s silicone-free, protects against heat up to 450°F, and tames frizz and flyaways, which matters a great deal if you’re headed somewhere humid (and if you’re leaving Houston in July, you’re probably not escaping humidity, just relocating it). R+Co’s Sun Catcher mist adds UV protection along with Vitamin C and hyaluronic acid, aimed at hair that’s about to see more sun than usual. Oribe’s travel sizes cover the brand’s signature repair and styling lineup, the kind of products that keep hair looking finished even after a day of travel, saltwater, or hotel blow-dryers that are never quite as good as the one at home. A Few Packing Guidelines Pack a leave-in treatment before a styling product. Damaged or color-treated hair generally benefits from repair first, style second. Don’t skip heat protection just because you’re “not really styling” on vacation. Beach waves from a curling iron still count as heat. If you’re flying, travel sizes solve the liquid restriction problem outright. No decanting into unlabeled bottles, no guessing whether 3.4 ounces is really 3.4 ounces. One more thing worth saying plainly: travel size doesn’t mean travel-only. A lot of clients keep a travel bottle in their gym bag or desk drawer for touch-ups between salon visits. It’s a genuinely useful size to have on hand, trip or no trip. Protecting the Work You’ve Already Paid For Here’s the part clients don’t always think about until it’s too late. If you’ve had a balayage, a gloss, or a smoothing treatment like Smooth Filler or a Brazilian Blowout, the wrong travel products can undo some of that investment faster than you’d expect. Sulfates strip color. Certain drugstore smoothing sprays can shorten how long a frizz treatment lasts. Chlorine and saltwater are rough on everyone’s hair, but they’re rougher on hair that’s already been through a chemical service. Sticking with the same professional line you use at home, just in travel size, keeps that risk low. It’s a small thing, but it adds up over a few trips a year. Where to Find Them M Salon’s current travel-size feature is live now on our products page , rotating in as our latest product recommendation. Stop by the salon or reach out to the front desk if you’d like a stylist’s opinion on which travel products fit your specific hair type and current treatment history. That’s really the fastest way to get it right. Hair varies a lot from person to person, and a quick conversation with someone trained to look at yours beats guessing from a shelf. And if you’re not traveling this month? Keep a set in your bag anyway. Houston humidity doesn’t wait for a vacation, and neither should good hair days. Ready for the hair you’ve been dreaming about, wherever you’re headed this summer? Secure your spot before your next trip and ask your stylist what belongs in your bag.
