How often people should wash their hair depends on several factors, including the length and type of hair and how many hair products the person is using on a daily basis. The general rule of thumb is to wash hair every two to three days.
Spacing the shampoos out allows the natural oils produced by the scalp to accumulate and move through the hair. Daily brushing helps with this in order to add moisture and keep the hair healthy. Those with very dry, brittle, or color-treated hair may need to wait a bit longer, while those who use gels, waxes, or oily products may need to wash more often.
While it may seem counterintuitive, washing hair too often can actually damage hair due to the drying effects and create an overly oily scalp. When the hair and scalp are washed too frequently, the sebaceous glands attached to the hair follicles can actually begin producing more oil, known as sebum, than is necessary. Dandruff and brittle hair that breaks easily when styling are common side effects.
Those with straight hair or very oily scalps may find that washing every two to three days is not enough to keep the hair from looking greasy. If this happens, dry shampoos can be a good option to soak up some of the extra oil and extend your style until the next wash. Powder, liquid, and aerosol spray formulas are available, but the sprays are the most popular and easiest to apply. Spray formulas usually need to sit on the hair for a few minutes until dry to the touch and then be brushed or blow dried through the hair.
Even when it is time to wash, it may not be necessary for those with medium to long hair to wash their ends each time. Many can just shampoo the scalp every two to three days and let the suds run down to clean the rest of the hair shaft. Applying conditioner only to the ends of hair can also add moisture and help prevent damage and split ends.
